I want to get a 460 measured in an anechoic chamber soon - check on-axis freq resp at all 9 postions.

I've never used one, but it seems like the CAD M179 is pretty well liked as a multi-pattern workhorse for cheap. Note it's an LDC, not a SDC like the SP1.

They go for $150 new if that's within your budget. It's also variable pattern which is VERY cool.

I'm actually shocked that I'm the first one to suggest it.

+1 on the PPA LD-3. It has 9 different patterns between omni and figure that are all really versitle.

CAD M179 would be a good choice. We have a couple at the studio and they are good toss them up and go microphone because they sound pretty good on anything. My favorite source I've ever used one on was as soprano sax, it sounded amazing.

The M179 is an incredible mic on lots of stuff, it's like a $600 for $149 in my opinion. I've always considered it the "poor man's 414" as it works on just about anything at least well, if not very very well. The patterns are completely variable as well, you simply roll the pattern wheel to select how much or how little room sound you want...done.

My main reach for them is toms but that is only because I own other higher end mics. The M179 is one of the few mics if you forced me to record a whole record with them...they would come to mind at any price.
