Traynor YGM3 (not re-issue)

Post by saibaba » Thu Mar 04, 2010 8:27 am

Anybody have anything bad to say about these?

They're quite affordable, if you can find one in good condition,
and to me it sounded like one of those "hidden gem" amps.

One thing is, I dunno how they sound overdriven with a pedal.
If anybody has any experience with these, I'd love to hear them!

There is really nothing bad you can say about any of the old 60's-70's Traynor tube amps. Yes, I'm Canadian and yes I live less than a mile from where these amps were made but I'm not biased. When I was a kid everyone had Traynors and everyone wanted Fenders. Now everyone wants the Traynors they sold when they were too young and stupid to realize what they had.
These amps are built like tanks (legend had it that Pete Traynor would build a proto-type, toss it out the 3rd floor window, bring it back up to the shop, plug it in and if it still worked then the model was ready for production) and they sound great. I have a 60's custom reverb that does double duty as a guitar and bass head as well as an early 70's Guitar Mate. The Guitar Mate is on of the best amps in the studio (and there are a bunch of good amps in the studio). I'd put Traynors up against any boutique amp as well as any fender or Marshal from the same era.
Traynors = awesome. Don't get me started on Garnets.

Excellent amps. My only nit would be the speakers in some of them weren't to my own liking. They take pedals very well and have killer tone. The reverb and tremelo (on the ones that are equipped with them) is excellent.
I still have a Bassmate head (close to the same thing) which sounds killer.

Even the TS-series solid-state amps get lots of love (especially on this other forum I know about).

In all seriousness, I really like my TS-50b as a guitar head.

i love those ridiculous legends of gear testing. legend has it that he would take a poop in it, submerge it in salt water for days, then run it through the saw mill, and if it worked, he was happy. another legend had him actually break the amp, and then jesus came back from the dead and resurrected the amp, and he was like, ok - this is tough enough for production.

True sleepers of the amp world. If you can find one for a good price, get it.
