Royer R101?

Post by svbsound » Wed Sep 08, 2010 2:11 pm

Just saw Royer's press release about their new mic...anyone know if it's available for sale yet? Or has used one? Looks similar to the R121 but at a lower price point...any more info on the differences would be appreciated!

I see them up in Sweetwater and in stock.
Um excuse me, these headphones aren't working...

I too am curious to read everyone's thoughts on this. I'm also curious whether any of the initial excitement over the R-121 has faded. A couple of my friends have mentioned recently that they are liking the M160 a lot more.

Don't forget that pattern on the m160 is different than the Royer figure 8's so some situations will not make them interchangeable.

Hopefully TapeOp runs a review.

The 121s at the studio are getting pulled out less often than in past years but then again who knows.

Favorable review in the new Tape Op. Somebody please go ahead and tell me why I shouldn't buy a matched pair...

I'm really considering picking up a pair of these. I've used the 122's quite a bit and really like 'em but can't quite afford a pair of those for myself. The review was favorable, but I was hoping it would have maybe been a little longer or more in-depth. The part where he compares it to a 57 didn't really make me want to go out and buy one. If anybody else has used 'em, I'd love to hear how they worked. I'm sure they don't suck.

Likewise, that gave me pause, too. I'd be very interested if they have 70-80% of the Royer characteristic.

At least that much. I'm loving mine on vocals where I might previously have used an SM7. Still prefer the 121 on amps.

3 questions:
Can you get right up on it like an SM7? Are there particular kinds of vocals you like it on? What about the 121 makes you prefer it on amps still?
