@ mquilling: I like that you are messing around with a cassette 8 track, that's a blast.

You could indeed try messing with TC, I've done it with software before and gotten it to work but it was a bit of a PITA. You could also look for a used MTP AV if you are going to do this a lot.

If I were in your position I would go even simpler. Push 7 tracks + a click track to the deck and then back in.

You can then manually correct for drift.

Just to be clear what you are describing is NOT a phase issue (though I'm sure you have those also). You are experiencing a mechanical sync "problem".
