ah, i love people who would rather throw money at a problem, instead of investigating their own short comings in achieving a desired sound. "it doesnt sound right! quick! somebody throw money at it!"

Cheap, easily obtainable, will beat most mentioned so far: Shure SE-30. I have a pair that I'll never part with. Killer FET compression that sounds like nothing else. Hard to explain what they do: when set right, lets the initial attack through, squashes, then sort of wooshes the tail way up. Reportedly used by Nirvana on Nevermind drums. I believe (but don't quote me) that it's the same or very similar comp to the infamous Level Loc. SE-30s also have great mic preamps by the way.

If you would, please, elaborate on how you think that is the case here.

I bet it works.
You bet your a$$ it does, very well in fact. Super squishy and musical. A good bit noisy, but probably unlike anything else out there, IF you can find one. I won't be parting with mine for anything less than $150. Seriously.

i think this is a valid point. a decent plug-in comp will do most anything you need it to, and you don't have to spend money either... like all of the "bootsy, variety of sound" stuff will get you most anything you need (and it's free).

when i started using daws many moons ago, i settled on sonar. it came with a set of plugs called "sonitus," and i've gotten most anything out of that compressor just by in the way i was using it...

the shure se-30 looks interesting. If I see one locally or a dealer site i'm buying one. i'm looking for comps with a lot of character. i like grit and bite.
