Electronic Projects for Musicians

Post by GussyLoveridge » Mon Feb 13, 2012 3:49 pm

Hey Folks - I'm sourcing parts for a few projects in that book and can't seem to find some of the ICs. I kind of recall seeing a thread on here about this, but I can't seem to find it.

Is it possible to use different ICs without having to change too much of the circuit?

I can't find - RC4739 or XR4739

Any ideas?

Yeah I have the same book and that's the problem with it...very out of date. You could always email PAIA and see if they can help?

The 4739 was obsolete at about the point that the ink in that book was dry.

Paia used to have an adapter PCB that swapped legs of a 5532 to fit the 4739 footprint.

I'd post a link, but 5 minutes of googling isn't turning it up...

What a bummer. I was super pumped to start into some of these projects.

So what's stopping you?

A TL072 or 5532 is probably a reasonable substitute.

If you're trying to use the original PCBs, you could get a wire wrap socket, and bend the legs to adapt a modern opamp to fit.

Scott Lee of PAiA makes a pertinent point on this thread here.

"....using more up-to-date parts for the older ones listed in the Electronic Projects for Musicians book (ie 5532 for 4739 and NSL-32 for CLM6000). Craig shows examples of the way these can be housed in the photos associated with the various projects. In the first several chapters of the book, general electronics info and construction techniques are covered. The examples for using the 4558 or 5558 op-amps in place of the 4739 are pertinent to the 5532 too."

PAiA still sells a few of the kits too. Look around on their site.

Thanks everyone. I've ordered up a couple 5532's and we'll see where I get with those.
