I'll sum it up for you:

It sounds better than the equivalent Tascam MSR-16. Personally, I think the dolby C noise reduction vs. the Tascam's dbx may be the key here. I don't know about the dolby S Tascam MSR-16 machine, but I hear its better sounding.

That being said. I would probably still rather have the Tascam. Parts and knowledge of the Fostex are GONE. Nobody has it, or cares. The Tascam build is better. The Tascam mechanism it better.

But, whatever. I have the Fostex (because my Tascam 16 disappeared), and I'll use it 'til it breaks. Narrow track is narrow track. Take it or leave it. Personally, I like it. The manual sucks, but spend some time and you'll get it.

I just patched the one I have to a Mackie 32-8...16 tracks for recording/16 tracks for play back. I have a tape that my buddy recorded on years ago and it sounded pretty warm (though it was synth tracks for a movie). Thanks for the replies.
