School me on the Alesis MidiVerb II

Post by georgeludwig » Thu Mar 21, 2013 11:15 am

I went through my storage space yesterday to pick up some things, and discovered that I still have an Alesis MidiVerb II. It's been in storage over 10 years.

I hear that people like some of the patches...what are your favorite patches and what do you use them on?

Second, I have limited rack space. To use the MVII, it takes up an analog stereo send/return on the DAW, and I have precious few of those. Is it worth it, given that I also have a Demeter RealVerb, Waves TrueVerb/IR-L, and AudioDamage Eos?

there is a looooong reverse reverb patch (maybe 44 or 45? I can't remember) that is awfully cool if you're into spaced out atmospheric stuff. It's cool enough to keep me from selling my midiverb.

I have the Wedge which is more or less the last evolution of the midiverb. The only thing I really use it for is the plate reverb patches. I usually EQed out a bunch of the high end but after that I found them quite usable and good sounding. Now that I have access to a real plate the Alesis isn't getting used much but before that it was on pretty much every mix I did.

45!

49 is good too. those are about all i ever use it for, but gtr->volume pedal->#49->looper is basically my whole shtick as a guitar player.

putting the distortion after #49 will get you into 'loveless' territory.

48 is an interesting echo, there's a low tune where that's the guitar effect.

91 is a good basic multitap echo.

some of the regular reverbs are probably perfectly useful for mixing.

In addition to the plate and reverse reverb, there might be a fun setting for "stereo" that exagerates the stereo space. If it's one of the patches, it's a lot of fun.

@winky: I'm definitely in to spaced out atmospheric stuff...will check those out!

@david: Plates are one of those things I never got in to that much...maybe it's time. I'll compare the plates to the RenVerb...if it's better than the RenVerb, maybe I'll try making my own impulses for Waves IR.

@MoreSpaceEcho: Loveless territory? Obviously, I need to try it!

Plates are awesome, IMO, because they seem somehow more obvious while still being pretty "organic", and also more controllable even as they can be pretty colored.

I probably just said nothing there, but I meant it.

I'm all about plates here. I have a Wedge. That's something Alesis did right, reverbs. Those 2 units are very nice sounding reverbs. More than usable IMO.
