Nice little sleeper mics aren't they? I bought one off local Craigslist for $30 bucks! I didn't know shit about it but I figured it's only $30. I was pleasantly suprised by it. I don't see my self selling it anytime soon, if ever.

I been doing this weird thing of buying and trying all kindsa cheap mic's for guitar amps - just bought a EV 674 a cuppla hours ago for US$23 offa the e-Bog - and so I bought the OM-2, and also because it's supposed to have great off-axis rejection, what it does, nice on BV's also but a little lo-fi ...
My fave cheap dynamic buy lately has been a Shure 545, just great on amps, and I like the 635a on everything - hardly ever "great" but always "good" (even on acoustic guitar) - and the AKG D5 and EV n/d267's are nice on vox and amps ...

using USB means the preamp is doing the a/d conversion. using that cable means the pc's sound card is doing the conversion.magritte wrote:Do you guys know if using a usb out in a preamp resolves the balanced/unbalanced issue I was having with the 1/4 to 1/8 output? I am learning on the fly so go easy on me.
using a 1/4 line out of a preamp ino the mic input of a pc will have all sorts of issues including impedance mid-match and level mis match.
you will need another a/d converter or you will have to by the usb equiped art unit or you will continue to have issues.

I'm also an OM-2 fan. They kill on guitars. I have an awesome recording of a slide guitar through a little fender amp that kills, just mic'd with an OM-2 about 2" off the grill. I'm pretty the preamp was an art project series. ha.
but for vox, I don't like them. too punchy and focused. they would probably do well for some in-yo-face hip hop vox. I used them for practice on vox. that's about it.

EV 635a = Unsurpassed on Rhythm/Background Guitar imho, a truly excellent "milky" guitar sound that's super easy to glue into the mix and almost never gets in the way of a lead guitar tone. Also pretty excellent on bk vox and "strummy" acoustics too. Get an MCA SP-1 if you're interested in a killer LDC for only $50 as well.
