Deduction on instruments
Deduction on instruments
I'm looking to put a session together to record a tune and I'm trying to get it down as faithful to the original as possible. What I need is some critical listening to get what instruments I need to assemble for that to happen.
Track:

I'm hearing 3 ( or more) trombones
bass, drums, piano, and probably a trumpet or two. The high instrument that sort of jumps in on the accents: is that a piccolo? or a flute? Sounds like a piccolo to me, but that's why I'm here.
Also I think I may be hearing some French horn in the middle of all that. Thoughts on this? This may belong in listening to others stuff, but I'll have a question on micing the brass later in the thread.

I make a living as an electrician, not recording in the basement.

Yes, I was thinking the same thing, Goober!
But, since you asked, yeah, it sounds like standard bb configuration with piano, bass, drums rhythm section, but nobody has mentioned the string section; was that a "given?" If not, I will go on record as hearing pretty prominent Creed Taylor-type strings.
