Re racks and re-racking
Re racks and re-racking
Aiight, so I currently have one of those open-frame table-top racks (12U) what is filled. I have another couple pieces in a metal milk crate underneath the rack (onna short steel filing cabinet), and some 1/2 space pieces just set on the desk.
I kinda want to consolidate everything into one location, free up some desk space; I think I need about 24U.
And I wanna do this cheaply and efficiently, and hopefully using the open frame rack I already have.
So, anybody use a short rack, say 12-24U, what will take the weight of a filled 12U open-frame rack stacked on top?
I did think about getting another metal milk crate but those cost about US$40, and I'm not sure about stacking two with the other rack on top, weight-wise ...
And yep, I realize I'll need rack trays for the 1/2 space pieces.
Idears, anyone?

You can build your own:
http://www.middleatlantic.com/products/ ... krail.aspx
And go to your local hardware store to buy enough wood to build the rack size you want to have. Consider using either a good hardwood, or making a sturdy frame, and then dressing that with either MDF or plywood instead.
The depth of the rack should fit the deepest piece of gear you own. Most are good with a depth of 18-24 inches. The width would be 19", and the height will be according to how many rack spaces you want.
Cheers

Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.
I've not the tools or confidence to do that, me, not sturdy enuff to be able to hold 12 pieces and the open-frame rack.
I s'pose I could get my bro' to build one (he's a table saw and such), but I was thinking more like if someone had something good to say about the Samson SRK-12 or the Gator Cases Slant rack or Raxxess ERK 16, or a On-Stage Stands WSR7500, or if there is something better. I don't think I can afford the Middle Atlantic stuff, altho' the BRK models mebbe ...

I'm pretty sure I have the ER14's - and they are sturdy racks. Heavy-duty screws are used to attach the top/bottom to the sides. But just an FYI - The top/bottom attach from the sides - so any weight put on the top will be transferred through the screws unless your current rack is wide enough to rest on the outer edges of the side pieces (cornfused? PDF :p )
I wouldn't worry too much about it - The ER racks are pretty darn strong...

Correct - Raxxess ER14 (14RU version), but maybe they re-named the line?vvv wrote:I can't find "ER14".
Raxcess racks? They seem to be ERK 12 or 16?
I'm leaning toward milk crates at this point ...
I see them at Full Compass, but I believe I purchased mine from GC-Pro. You can add casters if needed.
Come to think of it (getting old) - Mine are the 16RU versions, but same design:
Milk Crates will certainly work, too

Thanx, but I think I'm good.
This is in my bedio, and really, the only person uses this stuff is me, even when I have bands over for overdubs and mixing.
The metal crates are quite sturdy, and because nothing is tied down in them, they are actually easy access.
I just bought a cuppla used snakes, and I'm gonna re-wire this weekend, and label all the connects, also.

That looks like a disaster waiting to happen. I mean, great gear, but it looks like a balancing act.vvv wrote:Aiight, I'm workin' onnit:
Maybe it's just the low angle is what makes it look so ominous. I guess it might be OK if you and the band don't start dancing around it banging femurs on the floor.
Naw, it's just the angle; I'll do some photos in this thread later this weekend.
Trust me, I've already bumped into the thing a cuppla times ...
