I use the HD24XR as primary, not a backup, in the studio and live. I've had it for several years and it is rock solid, but I don't travel with it a lot.
The fact that you can record from analog and output to ADAT into pro tools works great for shows.
I think it sounds very good, I have not compared the regular HD24 quality to it but the XR has better converters and can record up to 96khz (though only 12 tracks).
You can get caddys for it to use sata drives as well.
No experience with the 1U units but of course as you mention your I/O becomes DB25s, whether that's a disadvantage or not is up to you.
