You can also avoid using mic stands as props because the cushions are usually stiff enough to stand and stack. Build a little house around the front of the kick and away you go.
And doubles as a couch-fort for the drummer to hide in after he hears his takes!

Just as a counterpoint, my mixes sound a lot better to me after I embraced the ambience rather than trying to avoid it. Drums mix better in air perhaps?

It's a plan, who has the nicest jam space?

Oddly I was just making a spliff bunker using couch cushions with my five year old son, of course we called it a fort so Mom doesn't get upset

Could anyone offer advice on removing unwanted sounds from kick drum mics? I recorded a kit recently and luckily the client and i are happy with the results, although there is a lot of bleed from the whole kit on the front k/drum mic and a lot of under-snare noise on the rear kick mic. During recording I positioned the mics as best i could in terms of the sound i want versus excessive bleed.

As it is, the bleed isn't really affecting the sound and I have no need to compress either mic. But it did make me wonder how i would have tackled the bleed if it had been necessary to try and remove it.

I have messed around with side chaining a compressor (im working in cubase 8) but couldnt really get it to work.

Any ideas (apart from gating which sometimes sounds too weird)?
If you're happy and you know it you are done...

Seriously, if the client and you are happy with the sound, you are done.

BLEED can be your friend.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Secure, too ^^^^. I love the rogue bars... (seriously... Mrs. Juke calls me "Capt. Safety").

Can I be Lee Scratch Perry, and stumble around the room dancing a funny skanking dance, while anointing the four corners of the room with white rum?

ah, rogue bars....is that the official name for those things? hate 'em. wish i had windows that weren't 100 years old, but alas.

you can be Scratch and do your rum dance, on two conditions:

1. please don't burn my studio down
2. no cymbals

I expect it's just that cymbals create odd harmonic reflections offa the rogue bars, right?

Azza aside, and seriously, I wanna mandate my drummers to use less (or at least hit 'em lighter) cymbals, yes, but more toms.

Ya know what would be marketing genius, mebbe?

Some drum-maker to sell a a "ride tom".
