A decent choice might be the Fostex 812. It's a 12 channel, 8 bus mixer designed for use with 8 track recorders. Not insanely heavy (maybe 25 pounds?), relatively small footprint, and they tend to go cheap. I've actually got one I'm looking to sell, but shipping would be fairly pricy.

Interesting, a friend of mine also just recommended the Mackie 1604, but he stressed that I should seek out the ORIGINAL 1604, not a later model?(VLZ etc).

There's a "Mackie CR-1604" listed locally...does anybody know if this is the original model?

It's probably the old (original) one. That's what I had. I've never used the VLZ ones, so I can't compare.

Thanks to everyone who replied and helped me out. I ended up going with a Fostex 812 that was for sale locally for $100. Cheap, compact, decent pres, and tailor-made for 8-track recording. Maybe I'll kick myself later for not shelling out for more channels, but like I said I'm a lowly hobbyist and I think it will be a good start.

Thanks again!
