yow..U67 inspired mics..
Hi People, hope you are well in this myriad crazy shit we're all experiencing..i haven't been here in a while..
im very happy to see the board is still open.
Im considering a U67 style mic right now, been shopping a bit..Finding much joy lately in a U89 i own and i want to up that a bit with a mic that brings a bit more above 5-6K while being flat below that..im looking for good mic..2,000 dollars used or so.
I've read of only a couple of designers who have actually tried to tackle the U67's transformer circuit filtering scheme in some way..
one of them was Beesneez on the so called Mahalia mic..i think the other one was Dave Pearlman?? that might be wrong
because im not sure he does a 67 inspired mic..
I've heard some pretty impressive clips of Beesneez mics..Those upper level mics of his have the sound and that stature of a quality mic
with a quality capsule. ( i dont really like the styling of them but i can live with it if they sound great)
Im interested in your thoughts on stuff that's out there..and im totally open to mics that are similarly voiced but not trying to sit alongside the U67 like an annoying ClonE

Re: yow..U67 inspired mics..
I've been doing some reading on this topic because I have a similar interest. It seems the peculiarity of that 67 circuit you mentioned is (in)famous.
I don't think Pearlman has brought out a 67 design, but he totally should.
There's been a lot of discussion about Warm Audio's new 67 model with opinions ranging from damn close to the real thing, to not exactly, but a great mic for the price.
I've heard the Groove Tubes MD1a referred to as a 'poor man's U67'. Having only used the MD1a I wouldn't know how good of a comparison that is. I don't think the circuit or capsule are necessarily alike, but the sonic footprint might find similar uses. I'd guess the MD1a is a little grittier. They're getting harder to find since they haven't been made for quite some time, and for the small few who know about them they're a great deal.

I've also read that the MXL Revelation and Groove Tubes MB3 have similar sounds.
But that's all just google info, because I'm bored.

Re: yow..U67 inspired mics..
never owned a U67. or any real Neumann mic for that matter.
Maybe you were thinking of Peluso - they do have a U67. ADK also has what they claim is a U67 inspired model. I had the FET version and it was not bad. I do have the Mojave MA-200 which I read was inspired by the U67. It's a great mic for a lot of sources.
for the money (really, for any money...), this mic has been great for me too:

I think the Pearlman uses a k67 in the TMLE (TM2 + K67) mic.losthighway wrote: ↑Sun Jan 31, 2021 7:39 pm

This is the first I've heard about this mic. Looks very cool and very budget-friendly. The Weird Audio website is pretty poorly designed and confusing though. If I was better at web design, I would definitely offer a redesign in exchange for a mic! Thanks for the link.digitaldrummer wrote: ↑Mon Feb 01, 2021 6:09 amfor the money (really, for any money...), this mic has been great for me too:

Here is the link to the Little Red Monster page: https://www.weirdaudiotech.com/littleredmonster
Unintuitively, you have to scroll all the way to the bottom of the page to get to the specs and description of the mic. It doesn't seem like it's a U67 clone to me, but I bet it's a very nice mic. Currently on sale for $577!

def curious about the little red monster, though was a bit put off by the company owner(?) going a bit off the rails at some detractors on a certain messageboard with (still) an unfortunate name.

weird audio. weird website. Agreed. But Tommy's a great guy in person and the mic sounded great with little fuss. I'm considering a second so I can do stereo on instruments.

I can vouch for Peluso mics - excellent quality and I use the P12 and P49 quite a lot. good customer support and service as well.

I've never tried the U67, but I had the CM47 and it was very nice. I know Tony had a couple of the AA mics too.

I reviewed the AA CM67se for the magazine. Its a really lovely mic. I should have bought it. Maybe I'll get one this year.digitaldrummer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 6:30 amI've never tried the U67, but I had the CM47 and it was very nice. I know Tony had a couple of the AA mics too.

Re: yow..U67 inspired mics..
I've used his FET47 inspired mic and the 414 inspired mics and I liked both a lot. The FET is really nice. It was the "SE" model. I'm planning on picking one up when the world is done ending.digitaldrummer wrote: ↑Tue Feb 02, 2021 6:30 amI've never tried the U67, but I had the CM47 and it was very nice. Dark, thick midrange. It doesn't sound just like a Neumann FET47 to me, but it works well in the same places and it definitely bats way outside its price range. Only complaint is I hate the shockmounts, but that's almost a universal thing for me.

Re: yow..U67 inspired mics..
the shock mount for the Little Red Monster is very much like a Rycote. it's a knock off, not a true Rycote but it works great. One of the first shock mounts I did not hate.
