EV 408
EV 408
I like EV 408's a lot. I picked up a pair super cheap 10-15 years ago and have used them on lots of stuff.
Pretty neutral. Balanced, no harshness.
I have one permanently on a guitar amp and the other on snare. So I ordered a used one tonight for $89 to use on whatever else seems to need it.
I like EV mics, and have plenty of them. But the 408 (earlier 308, later 468, currently "46" I believe) is special.
First time I saw one was in a fairly big studio, and the engineer, who could choose any goddamn thing he wanted in that joint, put a 408 on a lead guitar part. I was like.... Hm. So when I saw a pair a grabbed them.

Re: EV 408
Those are great mics (like so much that EV made). Back in my early live sound days they were fairly common with the really good techs around town.

I've got a broken one. couldn't figure out for sure, but I think the capsule is shot. I recall we used to use this on sax (live gigs) and it was pretty good...

Re: EV 408
They are great mics. I have a couple of solos to cut soon, I should remember how good they are on guitars for that date.
Re: EV 408
I have a 308B that I bought because it's N/D and I like those for live vocals, but also because of the cool form-factor.
It's now one of my go-to dynamic mics on amps, and others often remark on its looks.

Re: EV 408
I looked around, & it appears I sold off my 308 in one of my mic purges. This thread makes me feel very sad about that.
Re: EV 408
Thinking back, it was not 10-15 years ago I got those. Probably a pair for $100.
It was more like 20 years ago.
Totally a staple for me, so I bought one more.

Re: EV 408
Yeah — I love mine. I managed to buy 3 "new old stock" ones on eBay a few years ago (maybe 2018?)... still had the paper manuals in the individual cases. I bought them with intent to use them on toms, but ended up moving into Sennheisers (a set of e604's), however I LOVE these on guitar amps.
