This was amazingly helpful
If someone put a behringer mic pre in a neve housing, would you know the difference?

Re: Beyerdynamic M160 vs. Coles 4038
i’ve owned and used a lot of the hot topic ribbons and i think (by far) the 4038’s and the rca 44 are the most useful and the most compelling ribbons. i have the m160 and although it’s considered a hi fidelity mic, it really doesn’t have that vibe to me. it’s got a weird top end that is defiantly THERE if you want it via eq but not nearly as smooth as the 4038. it’s also a sort of SMALL sounding mic. to my ears it’s a kind of low fi sounding mic. the low end information is also much smaller than the 4038. that being said it’s a great microphone, but they are very different mics. and the 4038 blows it out of the water.

It was like Lazarus ..... as a newborn baby.
Good thread though, it predates me around here. Now I actually have both of these mics and generally agree with our new friend Marshall Ok, here.
Nice first post, buddy.

Re: Beyerdynamic M160 vs. Coles 4038
dinosaur thread, but since I just got a pair of Coles....
We have a pair of Coles and 3 M160s at our spot. The Coles are a recent acquisition. My fucking god are they magical. M160 is a great mic too though. They're very different vibes altogether, so I'm glad I have both.

I love what they both do, and very different outcomes.
I finally had RCA 44-BX and BK-11A up at the same time, the latter being the 'replacement' for the former officially, also very different sounding.
