$25 boundary mic

Post by kslight » Sat Sep 04, 2021 7:55 am

I don’t have a basis of comparison against other boundary mics, but I thought someone else here might give them a punt for $25 shipped with a cable included. I have a few of them, I haven’t been able to try them for anything but recording myself so don’t take my word for it, they work well on guitar (I would like to put them on drums but haven’t had any sessions in recent times).

Just ordered a couple. I always thought I missed the boat on the ones (Radio Shack?) everyone else has.
What's the typical "music recording" use for these - on the wall behind drums?

I knew someone that mounted a pair on a large piece of plexiglass and used them as drum overheads. Also heard of people throwing them inside a kick drum, on the floor as room mics, inside a piano…

I ordered a pair, also.

The one I have (not Rat Shack, mebbe AT?) is battery-powered and not XLR, so these will see more use.

If you read the comments, note that power interrupt requires you switch it back on.

You can try taping one to a wall and recording acoustic guitar, vocals, etc. Actually sounds pretty good if the mic itself is not crappy.

If it can handle the SPL they can be quite good inside a kick. They also work well taped to the wall as a room mic. Also taped inside the upper or lower panel of an upright piano or taped to the wall behind an upright.

I have heard of using 'em Electrical Audio-style on a wooden floor in front of the kit, separated and like 10' out or more (IIRC).

I read where one guy mounted each on a 2'x2' piece of 1/4" plywood to put 'em on the floor, hang or lean 'em on the wall, etc.

Got 'em today, and gave them a 5 minute test, hanging on push pins on 2 different walls of my bedroom studio. You have to hit the power switches on them every time you power up the mixer/interface (could be a deal breaker for some applications, I guess). Phantom power, mini XLR to XLR (cable supplied). Two dips on the back, I think they are a -10db cut and a low cut? (no manual and can't find one online at the moment). Comes with a mysterious plastic pin (for the dip switches, or maybe to knock out the hanging hole on the back).

I've spent more on stupider stuff.

The price went up, but I snagged a pair anyway.

To be totally honest I expected these to be on clearance, this is usually how monoprice works with sales. I can’t imagine they are a hot seller except any sales from this thread.

I rec'd my pair a cuppla daze ago at the low price (blowing on nails graemlin) but I'll hopefully get at 'em tomorrow or this weekender.

I'm thinkin' a acoustic guitar and a voc - depends on what becomes :high: necessary.

They certainly look legit.

I'll post a link and all y'all can hear 'em and not comment.

Mine are hitting next week. I'm going to try to mount them on the sides of the diffusor that is behind the drumset and see what kind of weirdness that might bring.
