BEATLES GET BACK DISCUSSION

Post by thepsychedelicdollhouse » Thu Nov 25, 2021 2:38 am

When Let It Be was originally released I was a sophomore in high school. Today I'll watch the first installment of
the Peter Jackson version. I won't lie. SO looking forward to this. Interested to know what others here think after
viewing. Happy Thanksgiving.

Started this today. I'm having PTSD flashbacks of collaborative writing on a deadline. My deadline was never as crushing as theirs but the mechanics and tensions are really familiar.

I’d guess most of is doing any of this any amount of time will have some PTSD flashes one way or another. I certainly did relate to many of the conflicts and pressures. It’s funny how much the scale of external expectations doesn’t change that part.

Did I see Johns do 2 bits of production they took notice of?

Orson’s kid; sure seems it. : )

Watched part two last night. Some observations now that they are down to work in the studio -

#1 - It's inspiring to see the Beatles be terrible. Meandering aimless jams, bad takes etc. It makes it all the more impressive when they're on.

#2 - The vocal are live! With a PA! Not a set of headphones to be see.

#3 - I listened to the Let It Be - Naked rerelease this morning. It's obviously much truer to the session then the Phil Spector mess. It's a super, super raw record. Way more raw than I ever thought.

it's not any easier to watch the Beatles have a little snit than it is to watch any other band do the same... it seems they were human after all. it's a little slow at times, but I can't stop watching. it's a large time investment though so only through part 1 so far.

I started in last night, but zonked off. It's pretty cool to hear early jams of things. I need to plan my viewing better.

Watching George Harrison's "Lucy" Les Paul take a tumble was pretty wild!

and there is sometimes just stupid, ridiculous dialog that would have been left on the cutting floor for sure (I was ready to nod off myself), except what's that? is that Paul banging out what sounds like The Long and Winding Road on the piano in the background? Oh yeah, there's that...

U67's everywhere! I've never seen so many in one place.

I guess this was also a super feather in the cap of Fender's Don Randall to get them all that gear at just the right time too.

Not a Coles or a Vox to be seen!

A friend told me this morning that he and the buddy he was watching with both kind of gasped when that happened. I have yet to watch, but my friend was definitely obsessing over the different guitars present at the session.

It’s been incredibly fun to watch so far. George’s humility in discussing what Clapton can do is astounding.

a few things I've learned...

1. Get Back started as a protest song.
2. nylon wrapped bass strings? makes me (and probably many others) want to buy a set to see how they sound - supposedly more like an acoustic bass
3. The Fender Bass VI (had never seen one before -- this one also seems to have the wrapped strings). John kept playing this one
4. the AKG C28/C30 mic

the film production team did a really fantastic job on the color restoration and that really is a lot of U67s!

nylon tapewound strings are popular for bass. some things to consider, they are regular strings then wrapped with the nylon overwrap, meaning they are super super thick, you will need to get your nut re-cut and will definately need a setup. they shine on hollowbody basses (or acoustic basses) by giving that upright esque tone. they do not sound like flatwounds, they have a ton of treble content (flats are dead sounding).

Herbie flowers who played for Lou Reed, Serge Gainsbourg, etc, used a fender jazz with tapewounds, he is another famous user of them.
