Critique drum sound?
Re: Critique drum sound?
Also for the next round I’ll put up a mono m160 as an alternate for oh.

slightly OT, but you mentioned the Mojave SDC. is that the MA-100 or MA-101fet? And did you flip the internal pad switch (there is one on the 101 for sure, not sure on 100)? I know the pad exists but I've not yet tried it on snare myself (I have a MA-101)
Re: Critique drum sound?
It’s the tube sdc, ma-100. The drummers playing lightly, I’m not needing a pad. But I should find out if there is one.

Try that 160 over by your wife's right shoulder (assuming she's a righty), aimed at the snare/hat. That's where it's always worked best for me, anyway.
Re: Critique drum sound?
I set it up tonight but we haven’t listened to it yet. What the internet said was point it straight down over the right shoulder between snare and rack Tom.
I guess if I point it at the snare will it pick up the ride and floor tom enough? But @morespaceecho it sounds like you’ve done this before.
I’ve used m160 as part of a mismatched stereo overhead pair, I didn’t find it amazing.

I've found the m160 a little thin on overhead duty, but I haven't tried it in morespaceecho position. It tends to live on guitar amps in my place.

Yeah it's been my default for years now. Gets plenty of ride/floor. I never really liked it in 'conventional' oh position, like right over the kick/snare pointed straight down, but I stumbled upon this position ages ago and stuck with it. Gets a nice crunchy midrange on the snare and a nice low mid punch on the kick.
I use it mismatched oh too, the other one is a condenser over the snare. That one's bright and shiny detail, the 160 is midrange crunch 'n' punch. Blend to taste. If I end up just using one it's usually the 160. I usually compress that one more too.
You might not like it! But worth a try.

It's the super tight polar pattern. Doesn't pick up a wide area really. You can get crazy l/r separation with a stereo pair.losthighway wrote: ↑Thu Jan 27, 2022 6:16 pmI've found the m160 a little thin on overhead duty, but I haven't tried it in morespaceecho position. I've done that over-the-shoulder thing quite a few times with mine and it does sound really good. In fact, I find that position to be solid with pretty much any mic that is appropriate for the task.
