Needing an Analog to Digital interface
Needing an Analog to Digital interface
I do spoken word voiceovers for training videos. I am currently using a Shure SM7 into a Pro Co Cough Drop, into a Groove Tubes Brick Preamplifier, into an LA2A. Recording with Adobe Audition into a Dell laptop using Windows 10 Pro, with a stupid cheap XLR to USB cable I found on Amazon.
It works but there is a buzz that I have to sample and remove, which leaves an almost pleasing reverb artifact. I'm not using any reverb on the recorded vocal, but the reverb like effect is there after removing the buzz.
I need an inexpensive A to D converter to hopefully eliminate the buzz and the need to do any sound removal processing. And, by inexpensive, I mean less that $200.
I Welcome Your Recommendations

Re: Needing an Analog to Digital interface
there are many decent USB connected interfaces in the <$200 range these days. here's a search at Sweetwater:
https://www.sweetwater.com/c695--USB_Au ... MjAwIn19fQ
the Focusrite Scarlett is probably a solid choice and there is even a TapeOp review if I recall (of an older model)... Also check out the new Universal Audio Volt (several options to choose from) - if you only need one input this one is inexpensive... https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... -interface
and yes, those XLR to USB adapters like you have will do just what you say - they are noisy and buzzy and may work for consumer use, but they are not up to par for professional use. And they are usually for a mic input so if you are using the Brick preamp, then you are probably putting line-level into it (and amplifying the noise floor). A real interface should get you there though.
also - if you do get an interface with the combo inputs, use a 1/4" TRS cable to go into it so it comes in as line-level from your external preamp or compressor's XLR output.

This may be the funniest post of the year.
Re: Needing an Analog to Digital interface
audient evo4 is about $130, it plays nice with an sm7b, especially with a durham mic booster in between them:

Thanks for all of the responses!
I have decided to give the Universal Audio Volt 1 USB-C Audio Interface a try. It's ordered & should be here in about a week. I will post my results when I have the opportunity to check it out.
Thanks Again!

Re: Needing an Analog to Digital interface
Success!!! Thanks for all your advices!!!
The UA Volt 1 rocks!!! Quite literally a plug and play solution.
My signal chain is now completely free of any unwanted noise, and it sounds Full & Rich! I will say that proper cables do matter a lot! I initially tried the Volt 1 using an XLR to TS cable and plugging into the Volt's combo input. The annoying buzz was diminished, but still audible. Switching to a quality Mogami & Neutrik XLR to TRS cable made all the difference. The entire rig is now dead quiet. Thanks digitaldrummer for that vital piece of information!

Re: Needing an Analog to Digital interface
I just went through this same thing. I'm traveling for 4 months over the fall and need something to pair with my laptop for writing and maybe some mixing gigs. I ended up with an SSL2. I haven't had a chance to dig too deep with it but so far it seems pretty good.
