those are very bright and "modern" sounding. ghs are the cheapest of the old school variety if you want to get some to A/B them. the great thing about flatwounds is even though they are expensive you buy them 1 time and that's it for life. they last forever and mellow and age like a fine wine.

any flatwound will take a week or 2 of regular playing to "break them in" to where they have a good sound. after that it just gets better. FYI. i've been playing flatwounds for 20 years, they are wonderful.

Well, I suppose I can always roll of some treble. I read some string comparisons and the bit about the old style E string being clunky with poor intonation scared me off. The Dunlop’s sounded like the best of both worlds at the time.

any old school flat is gonna have the "Dead" E string, here's the thing, play them for a week and all the strings are "dead" as well (they'll all match). that's the whole flat sound, no sustain, just bass and low mids punching through.

sure you can roll off treble but you can't kill that sustain unless you/bassist has very good string muting technique, or you palm mute. the whole thing with flats is that lack of sustain.

you can always try reamping your bass tracks through a smaller sounding guitar amp or something with less full range...

This is it. I know I play very differently with flats than rounds. I can get away with holding notes a touch longer, and feel like I can compress heavier, too.

Speaking of compressions, do you have a DBX 160VU?

I have access to a DBX 160XT. Why do you ask?

DBX on bass is something that was done in that era a lot and might help get you to the sound you're looking for. The VUs are different, but the 160XT might still be close.

FWIW, I use a 160xt on my usual bass chain, and love it.

I used a DBX something or other flavored plugin a couple of days ago and certainly has the bass line behaving.
