February RPM Challenge 2023

Post by Nick Sevilla » Thu Jan 19, 2023 11:17 am

Anyone here going to do it?

I am finally going to stick to making it through. I probably will not be going on their Discord server, it is a mess. I just cannot figure out Discord LOL. Maybe my 13 year old son can help there.

My limitations: 16 multi track or less. So I'll have to plan out the arrangement.

Only an RD8 (808) for percussion rhythms. Although it has the 11 outputs, I might just opt for a Stereo submix from the console once I get "the mix" from it. Otherwise I'll quickly get screwed on my 16 track limitation. A Hammond M3 organ (mono), an ARP 2600 (Stereo) and a Roland JX3P (quasi Stereo) for keyboards. Only one electric guitar and one electric bass. Only one mic for any vocals.

So basic tracks should be 10 tracks maximum if I use all those instruments, which can allow me for some overdub ideas like harmonizing stuff, guitars vocals etc.

What will you be doing for the RPM challenge?
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

thank you for posting this. I might partake. I need some motivation, I haven't felt the urge to record in a while, i'm playing out Live a lot so this seems like the sort of thing i need to get off my butt and make music.

Well, you know, I don't record anymore.

Nor do I record any less.

So as motivation, for me, mebbe.

Thinkin' about the 35 minute/10 song category - yooze?

(Just waiting on the fartwerk from my collab'r for a new scumble 3P. And waiting on the lead guitar for a new Vlayman release - I might hafta do 'em myself but gonna give my sometime guitarist one more weekend to get in and play.)

I just signed up. I'm going to aim for a 5 song EP but maybe go bigger if it really gets rolling.
I'm going to try writing/recording some instrumental music centered on classical guitar. I've been playing it a lot lately and realize that I haven't really recorded with it much.
My limitations - Everything will be recorded on my trusty Vestax cassette 6 track. Arrangements will have to fit on 6 tracks with no bouncing. Full takes only with no editing or fixing. Play it til it's right. The computer will remain turned off until it's used to capture my final analog mixes.

I'm in, I guess this is year 16 for us (under the name "Texturions").
https://texturions.bandcamp.com/
http://texturions.com

Usually 3 or 4 of us with 3 or 4 songs each, remote collaborations in some cases, up and down loads via Google Drive.
For myself, it's a good excuse to dust off instruments or pedals I haven't used much (no gigging in 3 years,
so most of them are in that category).
Lyrics and singing are hard, the actual "recording" is pretty routine at this point.
I got an ocarina for Xmas, I think that'll make an appearance.

My plan has evolved. Now it's an EP of classical guitar and pedal steel duets. The steel is played by my brother. It's the first time we've really made music together since we were teenager 30 odd years ago.

How's this going for everyone? I've got 4 of 5 songs in the can and the last one written and ready but scheduling will make me miss the deadline by a few day. Que sera sera.
I've started busting out some dub mix tricks to treat the steel guitar. Tons of fun!

Not much output from me this year - leaning on my 'band' mates who each did 3 songs, I have one finished and a couple of 'ideas'. Writing lyrics and singing them are usually what slows me down.

I got some choons done, not quite a LP.

What I am trying to figger out - and ya's know I'm notta contrarian or a grinch - but why go to the trouble of putting it on the RPM thing?

I mean, I understand the RPM concept to motivate recording, etc., but if I'm doing the recording anyway, why link it?

I'm not linking mine. It was just a motivation.

You don't have to share it with the RPM group. This was more of a motivator. ;)
