Recomend Me a Good Trem Pedal

Post by A.David.MacKinnon » Wed May 24, 2023 4:37 pm

This feels like a question for vvv but I'd love to hear opinions.
I need a good, simple, not stupidly expensive trem pedal. I prefer to get it from the amp but my favorite gigging amp (a Garnet stencil amp) doesn't have it. My three trem equipped amps are all Canadian made takes on Fender designs - a Garnet Vibro Champ clone, a Kent Deluxe clone and a Traynor Custom Reverb (basically a bassman with reverb and trem).
So, Fender style. Bonus points for the fewest options and knobs. Everything I've seen is way, way, way too tweakable. My preference is one great sound with rate and depth controls. Simplicity.

Thoughts? What do you like?

A friend (i.e., guitar player in my band) has the Fulltone Supa-trem2's and it's the most convincing I've heard live and for recording. might not be cheap though.

I also have one of the Fender Excelsior amps and I modified the tremelo time by changing a cap (although it's been so long I don't remember exactly what I did - but I may have pictures). I think it was a BillM suggested mod and he's unfortunately long gone.

I absolutely love the Mad Professor Mellow Yellow Tremolo.
It sounds great and has a gain knob so your volume doesn't have to drop the way it does on a lot of tremolo pedals.

The PCB version sounds just as great as the hand wired.

Boring suggestion, but the plain old Boss trem is pretty dang good.

1995 Ibanez TL-5 Tremolo Pedal. Can be had VERY cheap like under $50 cheap. I have put it up against vintage Schaller Tremolo's, Boss TR-2, Boss PN, etc. and it just sounds warm and wonderful. They are a sleeper and if you do a search you'll find everyone that owns one loves it. Just not well known. Here is a blog some guy wrote up about how great it is. They are also very small so fit atop most amps/keyboards.

Not a huge trem user me, but when I do it's the Boss TR-2, or one of the EHX Mistresses that does it.

The EHX Memory Boy can do a cool vibrato, as well.

I prefer, me, a kinda leslie-ish rhythymic thing to trem, and the MXR Uni-Vibe and the BBE Soul Vibe are good for that.

I have a soft spot for the old Soundtank pedals, so I immediately found one at a decent price and bought it. Thanks for the recommendation!

I really liked the Ibanez TS-5, had it on my board early on for a year or so in the late 80's; looked kinda cheap but sounded good.

I think I even bought a backup at a time when they were like US$25 used and tubescreamers were closer to a hundo.

I have a cuppla those Soundtank pedals, all mine are the later plastic versions, and I think they are all dirt.

As I recall, the Cyberdrive is the most unique, a kinda dirty, phasey wah-filter thing ... I should dig that out.

Not dirt cheap, but the Fairfield Circuitry Randy’s Revenge ring mod pedal has the best trem I’ve ever heard, hands down.

I've got one of these,
https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail ... molo-pedal

Does the job.

I'd like one of these.

May I ask, "why"?

I have found that stereo effects are good for recording (I love ping-pong delay, me), but a live stereo thing is a greater PITA than worth the effort.

Altho', it could be cool to cover https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mY8eKQFyRJk.

Because I have a stereo live setup.
