I tried using the Alesis Smashup before to squash a drum submix. Didn't work for me at all. Strange phasy-ness from the signal being slightly delayed by the comps A/D D/A I guess. I guess it would work on a signal you didn't plan to blend with dry of the same though. I've used it live for kick drum and it's pretty cool.

Here's my fav.....
This was used and owned by NASA for the limiting of their ham radio system.....can you say..."Houston, we have a problem!".
I bought it off a guy here in Houston years ago for $100.00. It's SS and not a valve limiter.
This thing is a devastating smasher and completely fabulous!

yeah, there is a noticable delay with the unit. no good for running in parallel or anything. not a really very pro unit.. but it smashes pretty well.

the 501 is awesome... joel has 2 and that's where i got into them (when I was assisting over at G)... they are awesome as 'destroy' compressors. they really are the poor man's distressor... I use mine on snare, and it ALMOST does the same thing as a distressor, for about a tenth of the price... when it's pulling back alot, you can hear the cheap VCA kinda choke, but it never sucks. always useful and nothing can really kill a room mic quite like the 501. it definately gets my vote, along with the wierd Shure mixer I have with 'gated compression'... i don't know the number... SC30 maybe? i dunno.
cheers,
john

alesis microlimiter - cheap and noisy, but sweet for smashing the crap out of a room mic.
[Asked whether his shades are prescription or just to look cool]
Guy: Well, I am the drummer.

I agree.
I'll vote for the MXR 136. Insanely cool. I used to use a pair of dynacomps for this sort of thing, but the 136 is balanced, quieter, and much more flexible.
Also, the Shure Level Loc and if you can find a good deal on one, the Altec 1612.

There is a Rocktron compressor that looks like a 160x clone.
It has a button on the front that boosts the level to the input and that thing sounds like a fairchild or something with that button pressed.
Without the button pressed it sounds like a lousy 160x.
I haven't seen one in years, but I need to find one to see if it's still as awesome as I remember.
I'll add 7110 to the list (smashing or not).
And yeah... micro limiter.

The glorious Rocktron 310. Shhhhh. That little gain button is magical.
