The best home studio-type of setup I've ever worked in was Dave Weber's Air Time in Bloomington, IN. The studio is for all intents and purposes, a separate building from the house, but the two are attached with an office and a laundry room and restroom separating the spaces. The studio feels like a real studio (and is constructed on a separate slab with high-ish ceilings), but has easy access to the house (which happens to be a very cool house, too). The studio has its own entrance, so no one has to go through the house to get there, but you don't have to go outside to get from the house to the studio.

I think the smartest thing about it is that if Dave ever decided to sell it, the studio space could be a perfect "rec room" or similar space for the next owners. It could totally work as an addition to the house and doesn't have the limitations that a basement studio has.
