Hi,gravitychapters wrote: ↑Mon Apr 12, 2021 8:50 pmYes to #1. I usually record through an external pre, which I then run into the Audient via its line input (actually a return, but same thing).
No to #2. Since I using a line-in, no need to gain up the channel on the Audient.
If you are inputting through the insert return, this might be an issue.
Ps I detest that they do not have a full picture on their website of the back of the unit LOL.
Can you try using their equivalent of a "line input"? In their specifications, they only mention a mic and a DI input. WTF...?!?
Read their manual to see what they do in the mic input... maybe that is better.
Howling at the neighbors. Hoping they have more mic cables.

Re: can a DAW be noisy?
Sorry for the pause, wife and I had a baby...
The mfg insists that using the insert return as a clean line input is totally cool. Nonetheless, I tried the mic input and got same results.

congrats on the baby (aka tax credit)!
did you get to try a different USB cable or move the interface away from other items/devices to see if any difference?

Now, as to:
"4. Nick, I think you're on to something. What I can't figure out, though, is that I can record the noise. Which means...wait, what does it mean?"
This simply means the noise is present before the analog to digital converter. So, it could not be the DAW or the computer. but then you wrote:
"Sounds about right. For me, this noise would literally start the second the Ableton Live logo pops up on my screen -- like, as Ableton Live begins booting up. Which is why, at first, I believed the problem was with Ableton rather than the interface. "
So if it is happening only with Ableton and only when it is on and "connected" to the interface, then this is a job for SUPER ABLETON MAN. AKA their tech support. This definitely does not happen with any other playback softwware like iTunes / Mediaplayer? What drivers do they use?
Maybe the drivers get swapped out or are not the same ones when Ableton is running? What drivers does Ableton use to see the interface?
Since the noise is crackles / crackly, and not a simpler pink / white noise, I think maybe somewhere, somehow, Ableton is making a ground connection with the computer, and the interface, which could potentially cause weird grounding noises. But what do I know. I have not used Ableton since the mid 2000s LOL.
I recommend you contact the Ableton people.
