Even the "I-just-bought-a-bunch-of-gear-and-now-I-run-a-'pro'-studio" people don't bother me, 'cause if they're good, they're good. And that keeps established places like mine on their toes - I have to be on the top of my game no matter what (I say that I would be anyway, as my clients deserve the best I can give anyhow...) Many, many times though, they're not good, or good enough, probably due to the common assumption that if you can afford gear you can engineer well enough to call yourself 'pro'.
In other words, in all my years at this, I've seen many more "studios" come and go than come and stay. And those who have stayed have found a different angle or niche in our shared market over here as to not completely compete for the same clientele. We're also fortunate that our region has a disproportionately high number of musicians and bands.
Just some more thoughts...

There was a Wall Street Journal op-ed the day after thanksgiving in which the (right-leaning) author asserted that the pilgrims had two lousy years of communal farming before they got smart and started capitalist-style, every family for themselves style of farming. At which point they found themselves to be much more productive than the communist model.
Funkmaster Brain does not seem to like competition. Those who spend time and energy complaining about the competition tend to eventually get SCHOOLED by the best of their competition. Those who get smart often end up working neglected niches, competing on quality, or working really hard.

They give me a temporary case of "aujida". I don't like it when they call or show up and quiz me about shit they oughtta already know, but, they wanna scam off me instead. Of course, on the flip side, there is a producer here from another studio who's clients are coming to me really pissed off at him.
Harumph!
