COmpressor Kits?

Post by inverseroom » Wed Nov 02, 2005 5:39 am

Does anyone sell a full-featured rack compressor/limiter kit, with instructions? I guess what I want is the compressor equivalent of the Hamptone pre--great parts, easy to build, and educational. I've built some stompbox compressors, but I'm talking about something like a kit 1176 or LA2A or whatever.

I want to know this too.
The g1176 looks cool, and pcb's are available but It would be nice not having to track all the parts down and getting some instructions.

IIRC Scott (Hamptone) was working on an fully featured Opto Comp Kit. The
Tape Op Comp he did for Tape OpCon was a ?limited? version of the kit he
was/is working on.

The G1176 is a pretty easy build, built one, waiting on my VU Meter, but the
rest is done. You could also try the GSSL Buss Comp as well, I know Dave?s
intention in to veer away from talk of clones, but I think these are a great
way to get into building DIY stuff as the PCB?s are available and there is
TONS of documentation on their build.

If you are keen to get into the G1176 I suggest you get your boards through
Mako (MNATS) on the Prodigy Pro Forum. His site (link above) has a wiring guide.

Hope that helps

Cheers

I also heard about the upcoming hamptone comp(s). From the limited stuff I've heard, it sounds full-featured. Its single channel in the same case as his pres.

by the way, im appreciating more and more his pre design. Notice how the paint on the inside of the case is stripped so that you get metal-on-metal contact? Separate chamber for the PSU... great design.

matta, check with canford UK, the sifams just came in and mine is on its way. Its also cheaper than buying domestically.

I've stuffed my g1176 pcb and now its just wiring and assembly. Wiring sucks, but pcb stuffing is fun.

Every step of the way building the Hamptone, I was amazed and delighted by the quality of the parts and (as far as I can tell, not being an expert on audio circuits) the design. It's beautiful in there. The little wall that separates the power transformer from the audio boards is heavy enough to kill a man with, the pots are smooth, the PCB's are large, with big pads and clear markings. It's just a great kit in every way, and sounds great.

Hmm, maybe I'll wait for the compressor kit...

There was a guy on Prodigy Forums selling kits to make an LA2A copy. I believe the company name was Bloo. It seemed to get good reviews over there.

if you wish to get a bloo kit - you'd better get a move on. There is an issue with the meters, and he only has like 2 meters left with a bunch of panels precut for that meter or something. It sounds like a mess - and I really hope that he can find meters to fit into the hole, or work something out with the meter company (they want him to order 1000 meters at once or something insane - at $75 a meter thats a serious risk to take!)

Send in the Clones!

Nobody mentioned this one:

Just another option.

yep that looks way cool...

it would be cool to see what people think of this Neve/1176.. anyone build it?

i also think purple audio is offering their M76 (1176 style comp) or whatever its called in partial kit form. I think its $250, which seems steep for just the pcb.. but don't quote me on this, im not remembering properly.. look for yerself.

The kit comes with an output transformer and the input attenuator .
I have been eyeing this for a while As I have some spare UTC 0-12 's for input .

I am building the Tangible Technologies kit. Waiting on the mouser/digikey order. Got the enclosure, transformers, etc. It is a definite step up from the Hamptone tube pre(which i did first) in terms of having to outsource parts, though there is a pretty good parts list. The documentation is a bit lacking if you are unsure of interconnection and i have done a ton of recon to try to minimize mistakes i might make; fingers crossed. I am leaving for a tour in a few days, but will be back in a couple of weeks and plan to make some progess then. I will post any updates i have.
Another way to go would be through Gryaf, who supplies schematics. If you go to the prodigy message boards you can find a ton of into about his designs. You can buy PCB's for next to nothing for his 1176, the SSL compressor, the Pultec EQ and more. There are tons of threads to follow if you decide to go that way
All the best

OT: what a weird, small world it is.

I just listened to Luminaria last nite, having just bought it last week, and am looking forward to hearing it again (loving it!) on the commute this evening.
