YAY, PORTICOS!

Post by JohnDavisNYC » Wed Nov 02, 2005 7:45 am

My Neve Portico Pres arrived this morning, just in time for the second day of recording the new phonograph lp... first day i used a borrowed api lunchbox, so i'll get to do a direct comparison of the same drum/mic/placement of the portico vs. the 512... should be fun. this album is going to be lots of fun... tons of optigan, casio, and twangy guitars. and the drums are HUGE.... the drummer plays a 72 ludwig with a 26" bass drum, 15" high tom, and 18" floor tom. total bonham sound, tuned pretty high. fun times. joel h is going to mix a track, as well... yay.

Fah real doh. What's up, John?

I'd be interested in hearing the record when it's done too!

Man...I miss Brooklyn.

john, can you pop the top and email or post some photos of the inside of that box?

I still dont think the world has gotten a straight answer on wether or not that circuit is discrete or not. Would love to see pictures of the boards and the transformers, assuming there are any.

John - I've gotta stop by at some point and do a taste - test on that portico. All I've heard so far is hype (however it's been very convincing hype).

well, from the sound (and the schematic) it definately has input and output transformers. i really liked them today on kick and snare. yesterday used a pair of api512s, and my initial impression is that the porticos have a little less 'knock' to them in the mids, and a deeper bass and a more open high end. the meters are super slow, which is wierd, although it may be that the 26" kick with no muffling was just keeping the mic 'moving' longer than was audible. dave, i'll try to get some photos of the inside at some point, and i'll email them to you. i have no idea if it is class a.

this is a preliminary report. it's gonna see ALOT of use on this album, so i'll have a deeper understanding of the charateristics of the pre soon.

Josh over at Rupert's place sez...

'yep. discrete, single sided amplification, transformer input and output.'

i asked for a pic of the guts, if he sends one. i'll post it ASAP.

DIX. what's up dude? thanks for answering the discrete issue on that. how's VT? I'm an excellent driver. Say hi to Friday if/when you hang with him.

Another good Portico sound thing today: they sound amazing for DI laptop. silly sounding, but i made some wierd eno-esque loops in my laptop and wanted to get them into one of the new songs (a country one... i don't want it to sound like country, so i added this.. eno-twang now) so i set up some passive DIs and then used the Porticos for gain with the silk button. wow. really nice and lush and open. not the typical 'plug the headphone out into the line in' sound.

definately falling for these preamps. i'm smitten.

still awesome pres... tracked some crazy guitar stuff today for the phonograph record.... gibson 356 through a crazy assortment of awesome pedals... (centaur, wooly mammoth, foogerfoogers (murf and ring mod) memory man, and some others...) into a fender pro jr. mic'd with a beyer m160 into the portico with the 'silk' button through a dbx 160 to 88.2 in logic... sounds ILL. can't wait for people other than me and my roomates and bandmates to hear this record.
