I second the U195 to 512 to distressor on kick. You can just put it up and it sounds good. A little tweeking and it sounds amazing. But, I like LDCs on kick.
It also sounds great if you're doing a single mic thing. If you find your kit /room's sweet spot and give it a good smashing with the distressor it can be a beautiful sound. I've tried this with different mics and the U195 was by far the best. Sm57 came in second.
Oh yeah, and my new favorite for overheads is a pair of 414s in either omni or cardioid to a 2-610 with a single notch(1.5db) taken off 7 or 10k.
It takes the edge off in such a nice way. -AE

yeah, the u195 has become my kick mic, thru a 312. it just sounds right. it's the one setup i've used that really makes my 24" kick sound like it should.

For quiet hand percussion I've developed a preference for the AKG D321.
Just cause it puts out more.
