did you hear him play in the barbershop on the Chapelle show?
it sounded like him.
That proves it's ?uest, not the mics.

Anyone know the deal?

He lives in th same building as me here in Brooklyn these days.. Maybe i will bump into him in the elevator...

he moved up from philly a while back...

I just did a tracking session with Adam Deitch, and we got some SICK breakbeat type of sounds happening. Amazing. That kid is great with that sort of thing...

I love the John Scofield stuff that Deitch plays on. I went to see Scofield at the Blue Note and Adam was playing a set with his own band AFTER the Sco band. Scofield sat in for a little tune called Higher Ground and it was HOT. The rest of Adam's band was pretty okay, but man he is a mother. hes like a drum machine, but...hes always changing...he just sounds like a drum machine in his tone qualities that he pulls out of the drums, but hes alway varying his beats. very hot.

Questlove ALSO a favorite of mine...ESPECIALLY on the D'Angelo Voodoo album. wow is that good. I'm sorta surprised to hear he moved out of Philly?

I did a session with him this year. Main thing I recall is he was VERY interested in learning about mics - so he probably experiments a lot. One thing he said - close micing the snare KILLS the sound "It's the enemy" was the exact quote! SO there's a good start for you...

This video gives a little bit of insight into how questlove gets his sound, I don't know if this is consistent with all his recording situations but it looks like he's either using the stc 4038's or the coles 4038's as overheads. Some bad ass shit.

Russell Elevado did a Q&A forum at gs a little while back, he's done a bunch of engineering on Questlove's projects over the years, here's what he said about drums:
