So...what's the newest on Tape Manufacturing?

Post by thereminman » Fri Nov 04, 2005 10:10 am

I didn't see this brought up yet here in the Gear forum.
Any news on who's making tape?
What kind? Where?
Any good news for us users of 1/2" 456?????????

Thanks for any info!

I heard rumors that Quantegy was going under again -- a local store said that the supply was once again limited -- although I couldn't confirm this anywhere. Weird how that kind of stuff gets started.

yikes...such an obvious solution going to quantegy.com!
duh. sorry.
I guess I didn't even think they were in the game anymore and that someone else would be taking their niche'.
If I can keep getting the 456 from QUantegy..well, that's a good thing.
Thanks for the info and patience.

Did they then tell you that a reel of 1/2" 499 was 3 million dollars? ;)

ATR seems to still be on the way to making tape. They were showing empty take up reels at AES.....

Oh I am so dying to get ahold of a reel of the new ATR stuff. I don't even know what I am going to do with it yet. I mean, I know I'm going to make music on it. I just haven't figured out what and how. And I'm not sure I care.

Know this: at AES Mike Rivers found FOUR manufacturers exhibiting. Here is his report:

Just before Quantigy closed last year, we got 3 cases of tape (from diffrent batches) that WOULD NOT bias-up correctly. High end was all over the place, low end sounded like sand paper. You could see "birds eyes" all over the tape. When the suppler would not tape the crappy tape back, I went to Quantagy with frequency/level sweeps from an audio precision, the reply...."its normal to have 3dB of error"

The new production of quantigy (GP9 on the silver reels, 456) seems to be as great as the old stuff. Ive never had a problem since, however, Im stoked to get some new tape formulas!
