And the problem with that is? :-)

My scores:

Rhodes piano: free, helping someone move, and they didn't want to move the rhodes.

Hammond M3: free, a friend of mine's roommate got it from his grandmother's house, then the roommate moved out, and my friend wanted to redo his floors, and the hammond was in the way.

ARP Oddyssey: Guitarist in my band borrowed a keyboard stand from me and broke it, gave me the oddyssey as a trade. He'd bought it for $125 at a pawn shop.

Minimoog: $700, from a friend.

Nord Lead 1: $500, happened to be at a music store when it was traded in, bought it before it hit the floor.

I've gotten so many deals in the past 5-10 years....I can't match Shawn's one time deal, but can definitely give him a run for his money overall.

Roland RE501 - $75
54 Fender Deluxe Tweed amp - $40 (now belongs to John Spencer)
Martin D18V, first year 84 - $175
67 Fender Super Reverb w/ Maestro Echoplex, tube version - $200
50s Gretsch kit, 20/12/14 -$500
59 Pre-Serial Ludwig Supra COB - $50
67 Vox "clyde" wah -$10
Beyer M500 -$10

...I could go on and on with this. I've gotten so many great deals....

The only true great mic on this planet is the Shure SM-57. It is the most consistant in not totally sucking of anything ever built. All other mics are "application dependant".

Geez, I've got nothing on you guys, but I do have a few little trinkets:

Early 70's Baldwin Electro Piano: $100. It's a spinet piano with a cast iron frame, strings and has little pickups running along the frame with a solid state amp and a 12" speaker- and it's all wrapped in white formica. Pretty great, actually, and I can play real piano with headphones. got it froma little old man in Connecticut who paid $1800 for it in 1972.

RMI Electra Piano- $35 from a flea martket in Pennsylvania while on tour ('cuz why wouldn't I add a giant piece of gear to hall around?) It only makes one usuable sound- a cheesy harpsichord sound exactly like "Why Can't we Be Friends" by War, but it's got major Linda McCartney mojo. I use it at least once on every record i make.

YU Bros. mystery EQ $25. I bought it when I was 15 because I didn't have enough dough for the distortion pedal I really wanted. It's just a little blue 10 band EQ pedal. but if I use it with a class A amp that's just breaking up, it sounds like Joe Walsh in a box. I've never been able to find any information on Yo Bros- the name on the box.

1967 Hofner violin bass- $400. A bargain for what it is. It had a hairline crack in the neck joint and the store couldn't unload it. I spent $60 getting it fixed and it's amazing- tapewound strings, sounds absolutely perfect.

I got a few really good deals when I worked at a music store.

Per CBS blackface Bassman head--one owner Fender tubes--$60
Mesa 2x12 -$65
Mexican Strat with hard shell case-$60

other deals
Wurli 200A $100 from a friend (maybe $75)
1964 Gibson LG1 $300 sold it for $500

There are some others too, I can't remember

My first proud-to-tell-you-all-about-how-I-made-out-like-a-bandit-item came from a fire sale (a real one: the place caught fire and the fire dept. said to the guy who calls himself Robot Repairman - I am not making this up - you got to shut down this operation). I bought a shoebox of stomp boxes for 10.00. All I saw was a Boss tuner covered in smoke on the top. The Boss Tuner was literally toast, but I didn't care much; underneath it I found an Ibanez OD II - which would be the overdrive pedal immediately preceding the TS-808. The OD II seems to have a Malaysian chip now out of production that apparently gives some guys a boner. I just cleaned it up and traded it for what I owed on a Telecaster.

Even though I mentioned the next item in a previous thread, here it is again: At a yard sale I got a Voice Of Music 166-A all tube 5 watt amp made in the 1950s in mint condition. It was made to be a amp/speaker combo unit for their reel to reel tape recorder/players. As a matter of fact, it had a bunch of 1/4" tapes in a compartment built just for that purpose. This was just 35.00. I plug my guitar into the 1/4" jacks and play at home with it and get the sweetest overdrive at low volume. You want bargains on low watt amps, follow Voice Of Music on Ebay.

There it is, I'm done bragging. Now can we kill this thread since it has only lived so long to allow me to add my crowing...uh, I mean crowning comments?

my lucky moments....

Post by tomhampton » Mon Nov 28, 2005 1:11 am

just within the last couple of weeks, i got a 1937 hammond organ for free in a basement evacuation (although i did give the buddy who turned me on to it a $50 finders' fee) - it's sitting at speakeasy vintage music right now, in line for repair...so it may not be much of a "steal" by the time the dust settles....

got a princeton reverb for $65 - best sounding recording amp i've ever used.

that's really about it...i've been avoiding this thread for ages, as i don't handle envy well - and after reading all your responses, i'm finding i haven't made much progress in that area. :)
