shit, if that little thing is an "automatic" sound you guys havve to come to terms with the fact that many of your mics have "automatic sound" built into them to start with. Plenty of mics have EQ compensation in the amplfier, same thing as that little barrel.
I think by and large, many of the things people pay insane amounts of money for could be classified in an "automatic" sound kind of category, an 8068 is probably the ultimate example of that.

I like the kickpad on a d112, inside the bass drum. You get the isolation of an inside mic with the boom of an outside mic.
I also used it with a 421 on a floor tom. It was a "3 guys sitting around the room" kind of loose, live acoustic recording. The tom ended up sounding like a mix of a bass drum, a floor tom, and a timpani.

i recently did a test between a 602, a D112, a D6, and a 421.
602 RULED the beater (3-4" off beater, dead center, maybe 30 degrees off-axis). it has a very harsh eq.
D112 RULED the bass (on axis, grill 1/4 - 1/2" inside the plane of the blow hole - this spot worked well with all mics. with drummer beating, hold the mic lightly, and slowly slide the mic into the center of the hole until the gust causes the mic to wobble slightly. that's your spot - bass heaven.) this mic is otherwise worthless on kicks in my opinion.
D6 was the jack of all trades, master of none. very pillowy in general.
