Sennheiser E602. I have been loving that one for a while now.

I have a FET47, a beta 52, 421's,RE20.SM7, D12,D112, a bunch of others considered "good for kick drum" and I wind up with the E602 on almost every session, regardless of genre.

the kbm412 is pretty lackluster, isn't it?

Have you considered the Audix D6? I like mine very much, and use it on my bass cab as well as for kick.

I dig the Audio Technica ATM25. I've also owned a Shure Beta52, but I liked it better live than recording.

I'm actually a fan of the Beta 52 for modern rock recording, it takes very little eq and is punchy as all get out. My drummer has an old '65 Slingerland 14X20 kick drum (with a hole in the front head) that is a match made in heaven for it, but OTOH he also has an 18X26 vistalite kick (no hole in the front head) that an sm7 is perfect for, so nevermind what I said it's all subjective... :D

kick mics are so much about personal choice...

there are one zillion ways to record kick. anyway, i would take your $250 budget, and buy some $150 or so mics.. buy and sell them till you find the right one for you. start with something standard like a d112 or a 602 or an atm25. see if it works.. buy used and you'll only lose like $20 or so if you have to turn around and sell it.

then look for shit like an m88 a 421 a cad e100 etc. see if those work. maybe a pzm.. keep those mics moving... till you find something that really works for you.

hey joel, does the 602 have that forward kind of sound the 609 has? Been eyeing one of those for kick for a while. After a long battle I figured out a good way to make d112 work so kinda forgot about it though.

I'm not sure what kind of music you're into but if you check out the MySpace link in my signature all of the kick drum sounds in the MP3's (not the best quality, I know, but you'll get the idea) were done with that Slingerland and beta 52

lately, I've been using a d112 inside with one of those Earthworks KickPads, and a 421 outside. those together with a pair of 414's about 6ft. in front of the kit.
