cant give all the good stuff away, hehe

they sound kinda wierd, but if you find the right mic and pre combo to accent it, they can sound pretty good actualy. Sort of a wierd mic to use alone though.

Here's a D112 trick for you...
Put the D112 in the kick drum, but turn it to face the wrong way, then add in some NS-10 woofer or EQ in some bottom end.
Pretty cool sound for the right material.
The d112 actually sounds more aggresive to me facing away from the beater for some reason.
I don't always do this, but it sometimes works better that way.
I find it surprising when someone simply puts a kick mic inside the drum and says "this mic sucks". Take it out of the drum completely or move it around a bit.
Good sounds aren't always automatic.
Every kick drum is different.

Food for thought- an RE20 or 421 will make a good kick mic, but you can use them for lots of other stuff, too. I've always found "kick mics" like the D112 and B52 to be pretty limited in other applications.

I use my d112 occasionally with some success on guitar amps and vocals. not as often as the 421 or RE27, though.

I know this is nowhere near $250, but I have been loving the shit out of the Lawson L47 FET outside the drum. It's by far the closest thing I've heard to a real FET47 in that application. Haven't tried it on much else yet, but I fully intend to.

I also finally got a D12E, so I've been kind of stoked about that lately, as well.

I second the D12E I picked mine up several years ago for $100. Also MD421 is a good solid kick mic.

E-602 is the shit!!!! Use it all the time. Except maybe for some jazz sessions. When my first one got a little tired I went to replace it and heard so much about the Audix D-6. Returned it the next day and got another e602. 'nuff said.
Over my head, I hear music in the air.

I have a FET47, a beta 52, 421's,RE20.SM7, D12,D112, a bunch of others considered "good for kick drum" and I wind up with the E602 on almost every session, regardless of genre.
The White Stripes use a 602 on the kick for live shows and i'm still recovering from it. It was so huge it almost knocked me over... maybe that was the booze..

I just got my first D12 too!

Here's a $5 kick mic for subs:

Image

It's an 8 ohm speaker wired directly to an XLR jack. It doesn't have much over 200 Hz, but who cares? You can always put something else cheapish (SM57-ish) on there to pick up beater smack.
