favorite places to shop for gear online?

Post by roryrok » Mon Nov 14, 2005 6:24 pm

i remember a thread like this in the old board being helpful, maybe some new places have cropped up?

everyone knows sweetwater and mercenary, but what about more obscure sites with consoles and vintage mics? mistyhillaudio.com is my personal favorite of this type, whats yours?

vintage king, sonic circus, AND...?

well, for new stuff, full compass has really had the best prices I could find and their customer service has been stellar by me so far. I dont know if they carry lots of pro audio boutique lines, but if you need a sennheiser, they are a great place to check out.

I've never found FC's prices to be even competitive, let alone best.

FC's prices might not be the "best", but they are usually pretty easy to talk down on the price. Their reps are pretty knowledgable and, as stated before, their customer service is great. My only complaint about them is that they don't list all of their prices online, which means you have to call them. Sometimes I want to know how much something is even though I'm not that interested in buying it. I hate to waste everyone's time by making a phone call to check on a price of something I'm not going to buy right away. BSW is a broadcast place, but is ok if you want mics, cables, headphones, etc.

Well they certainly kick the shit out of everyones prices on Beyer mics. M160's for $419 all day. Their advertised web price and what they give on the phone is totally different.

I used Full Compass for the first time last week and they were great! Fast shipping too. The sales staff actually knows shit about the mics...

For consumer stuff, humbuckermusic.com is the best. Jake Langston, the owner, actually uses the stuff, will even take it out of the box and test it for you.

This is true. But whatever you do, don't buy their "pick 'n' pluck" foam. It's a total ripoff. I got it for my mic cabinet and it turned out to be the biggest waste of money ever. They wouldn't take it back cause I already tried "pciking" it.

Markertek's prices on gear are a little high, but they're great to deal with and their custom cable shop does great work.

Full Compass is still my favorite box house, even though their whole system of each account having their own personal sales rep is a pain in the balls. Yeah, you can order stuff from Compass Express, but if you need to do anything complicated, you have to track down your salesperson.

For regular music store stuff, I like 8th street music. Decent pricing, and if I call in the morning ups ground gets here next day.

Had good deals with BSW.

B&H photo had the best price I found on M160.

Full Compass isn't really online, but they are the best I have seen.

I just got a new Epiphone G-400 from American Musical Supply
It was set up just fine (although I re-did it because I use heavier strings...) shipping was free (and fast), and they have a deal where you can pay in interest-free installments automatically through your credit card. This could get dangerous, so be sure you have control over your GAS.
not to worry, just keep tracking....

I also like to buy used gear from this forum and Gearslutz. I have never been led down a wrong path yet. As far as used stuff, I feel safer buying from you guys or Gearslutz guys than off ebay.

Mike Nehra at Vintage King rocks! They had the best prices I could find on all the API stuff and you get a free Lunchbox when you buy four modules. I didn't have all the money at one time so he set up a sort of layaway deal for me. Three months later I got my lunch box and am now a stoked and loyal VK customer. Used stuff off Gearslutz, Ebay, and Here!
