Electronaut tube mic pre. Anyone used this?

Post by Coco » Wed Nov 16, 2005 1:23 pm

Just saw an Electronaut tube mic pre and the thing looks insane. Looks like a really awesome build quality and they are hand built by one guy to order. The pics on the site don't do it justice and I saw a pic inside and it looks really high quality. I have never heard of them before until about 15 minutes ago. Any users? Comments?

I contacted Bill Skibbe about his flickinger preamp a couple a years ago. He said the flikinger wasn't done yet but sent me to the link to his friends company electronaut. I contacted him about purchasing one....and he said they where not taking orders at the time...as he was moving shop....and going to do a new website update (the website has never been updated to my knowledge). I have not been able to find any reviews of this unit anywhere. But I'm curious about it. I may end up just buying one testing it out and if I don't like sell it.

The link I gave is for the new site and there is a link to the old one on the new site. It certainly looks like a nice machine. I wonder how much it is.

Oops, I just clicked on that link. He must have done that recently. The old one is better.

I just got a quote of $1800 US and $100 extra for the metal mu transformers, not sure if he is giving me a deal or not. This guy can also put other trannys onto a daughterboard so you can just pop in another transformer at will. Pretty cool. He can also design the pre around other transformers like a Sowter or St. Ives ect. and give it a bit more gain if needed. It is already at 55db but I think I would want one at 65db for my ribbons. If I get a decent X-mas bonus from work I think I will go for it.

Hey Folks,

Just to clear up confusion about the price, Coco is correct that the price is now $1800. The guts have been completely redesigned to be easier to make, without any compromise in build quality. It is also much easier to tweak and customize the unit.

I had a lot of fun designing and building the old M63 with the crazy looking insides, but it was completely impractical to try and build more than a few of those -- they were extremely labor intensive, and I would pretty much break even at the $2600 price tag. The idea of building something none of my friends could afford made me depressed.

So yeah, the new one is better and more affordable.

Anyway, thanks for taking interest in the M63. Feel free to email me with any questions about the unit, so that I can respond personally. I'd rather keep the shameless self-promotion off the Tape Op forum!

Cheers,

Rob didn't want any shameless promotion, but those of us at Clava Studio here in Chicago have known Rob for a number of years, and he's a first rate guy. Totally on the up-and-up and worth dealing with...

We just had one in at Wall2Wall Recording and everyone was struck by how rad it looked. Its got the Trim and attenuate controls so you can drive the tube as much as you please. I think only things they were used on though were bass and vocals. But all in all the consensus was great.
