Battery-powered 4-track?

Post by wesbonifay » Sun Nov 20, 2005 10:55 pm

I need a battery-powered 4-track. My job requires a lot of driving, and I often have breaks in the afternoon and nothing to do. So if I could keep a 4-track and a cheap mic in my car, then I could record the melodies and drumbeats that I come up with during my breaks. Sound quality doesn't matter so much, as it is going to be a song writing tool. I looked at the Fostex MX-12 and the Tascam MK-P01, but they don't seem to be battery-powered. Apparently the old Tascam Porta-01 was battery-powered, but I kinda wanted one of the smaller, newer ones. And it doesn't have to be analog....whatever works. And it need to be cheap (preferably like <$150...). Thanks, TapeOp!

One of the old Fostex models (X-15 I think) had a battery pack option.

The 4-track Korg Px-04 box (or the newer version) should do the trick for you. It is very easy to use (and yes, I have used it while driving); you can arm a track with one button. The readout can be backlit or not as you wish.

I am certain that you could even plug it into your cigarette lighter because it has the same power supply as most of the portable CD players out there. Otherwise there is the option of RC AA batteries.

The recording quality is what it is. It's sure better than the recording quality of my own brain, otherwise I would have no use for it!
