Anyone else have this problem? (sm57)

Post by Trem2 » Sun Nov 27, 2005 11:50 am

The little wind screen thingy that covers the capsule is loose and makes an annoying rattling sound when say the kick drum is hit.

I tried putting a little tape on it to hold it still but fear this is messing with the frequency responce of the mic.

What the hell ?

First thing I do when I get a 57 is wrap some black tape around the base of that thing.. It always happens.

That is lame. It looks like such a sturdy mic.

That alters the directionality/frequency response of the microphone...
That is either a good or a bad thing...

I'm sure it does alter the pickup, probably makes it more of a hyper cardioid mic, I dunno, but whaever it does it still sounds better than the alternative.

I used to do live sound, it took me forever one day to figure out what in the hell that rattling was. It's been ever since that I haven't owned a 57 without a band of black tape.

Nope. Makes it more omni.

BTW, why in the hell would the tape make it more omni? You'd think it would become more hypercardioid. I mean, I believe you--I've heard this before--but WHY?

The wholes in the back are the phase cancelation slots that give the mic its directionality.

Done it before. Works ok. We wre recording one of our rehearsals and only had a 57, so I just put some tape on it and stuck it in the middle of the room. I think I read about this in an old Tape Op once upon a time.
I know enough to know that I don't know what I am doing.

this is why when doing live sound, when a vocalist cups their hands around the head of the microphone extreme feedback ensues. The mic loses its rear rejection (directionality) and starts feeding back with the monitor.
