Good Sounding Dynamic Mic For Drum OH?

Post by Catoogie » Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:21 am

Sorry if I don't know the correct terms but I'm looking for a mic that doesn't need phantom power that I can use as an "Idea Mic" drum OH so I don't have to fire up my whole system. I'm thinking I'll use some Radio Shack plug adapters so I can input to my old Sony Cassette Boom Box. Any suggestions?

I'll second that. Buy a used 635A. Will be perfect for you.

EV635A can be pretty good, but the best dynamic overhead I have ever used is the EV RE55. In fact, it is one of the best sounding overheads I have ever used (which include coles 4038s, akg c24...). They are omnidirectional dynamics and are flat frrom 20-20K. So smooth it will blow your mind. Being omnidirectional, it is important that your room sounds pretty good. They can be found for 100-200 a piece.

i like a stedman n90 in this role. its reasonably flat. affordable. its got a very wide pattern which i like as well. ive used it as the mid for a mid side OH when i was trying to sound 60's y, i think it worked well.

yes, this is also a great dynamic. the RE55 and the n90 are actually very similar in sound. The N90 is a shy bit thinner.

or you can try taping the base of the plastic grill on a 57, as was described here on tape op earlier today. supposedly, it makes the 57 more omni when the tape covers up the phase cancellation holes.

indeed, the n90 seems to have a roll off starting round 120 or so. its also just a hair honky somewhere. havent really gotten to the bottom of that issue. EV capsule, or so i read on the internet. mine spends its life in front of guitar cabs.

damn. now i want an re55.

the RE 55 is a mic you will never part with. get two. It took me a while to find a pair. I paid 350 for both of them. This mic is so underated, I just don't understand. I keep trying other mics for overheads but these just dominate in my room for this application.

Keep the RE-55 a secret! Otherwise, they'll be $2000 in 6 months.

tape op ribbons? get some from fum.

also, beyer 201's work surprisingly well - hypercardoid, too. the 101's are omni. I think I posted a clip of them on drum room which may give you an idea... you'll have to search.
