Power Conditioning

What is everyone using to get their power nice and clean and stable?

Is there a unit that does the job for under 500 bucks?

I bet you would only have to worry about power outages with one of these:

i got a furman ar-pro used for around $550. i had to get an electrican to run a 30 amp line from my fuse box for it. it really made a difference in our studio. we were having a lot of overage issues that were making us nervous. we run all of the gear in the room off of it and draw 15 or 16 amps. this allows us to use the regular wall outlets for heaters, phone, etc.

There was a huge thread on this at John Klett's forum on prosoundweb. I found it incredibly informative.

As to answer your budgetary question, well, that's complicated. You can find great used constant voltage regulators which use caps and xformers, but I understand they might make the power noisier in some cases. I have found them (big Sola for example) for about 60 clams, but these won't help in a blackout. Perhaps finding a big used APC and replacing the battery might do well, but I'm not sure of the implications of home refurbing these things.

I hope the Klett post helps.

There is a company in the hi-fi audio field called Panamax They make really good stuff. I worked at a hi-fi shop for a while and saw there demo. The sales guy was a SALES guy but they toasted a monster power conditioner with this "lightning generator" that didnt do a thing to the panamax. Check em out.
