I watched Elton John the other day singing into a beta58.

But then Elton John could probably make my 990 sound like gold.

I heard somewhere, that Elvis Costello's "When I Was Cruel" was done with a Beta 58. MMMM-Good.

Or, if he was using it in a Disney soundtrack, like shit.

I never record with 58's anymore. They just never seem to be the right tool for anything while recording. I've recently attempted to use 58's for spoken voice with absolutely no luck. I don't see myself reaching for them anytime again now that I have alternatives.

But live, I couldn't sing with any other mic and feel comfortable. I use my own, always have (smells better than the average bar-owned version) and most any engineer knows how to work with them. They feel perfect in my hand - from weight to balance, they feel perfect in my stand and clip (20 years with the same stand and clip - this is a loving relationship) and they are the only live vocal mic I've ever known. No turning back. I do have a soft spot for the good old 58.

The collaboration I did with Elvis he sang into a beta 58 while playing guitar at the same time. Any punches (two of them) were guitar and vocal. it was a beta 58 into a neve 331114 (in the 8068 console at avatar's A room) with a tiny bit of compression from a PYE compressor during the mix. He likes the vocals loud it seems....
