I was just listening to that record a couple of days ago. I'm looking at the sleeve - it's an SM56. Basically a 57 with a stubbier, right angle mount.

I'm looking at my 60's era shure catalog, and the 545 is a straight mic. They seem to be 546's, because they have that cylinder shaped base which shure called a "rubber vibration isolation shock mount". It's almost the same mic as the 545, with a different base. It was MUCH more expensive. ($60 for the 545, vs. $103 for the 546). The frequency respose is spec'ed the same, but the 546 could also be switched to either a 25 ohm or 250 ohm impedance. Given the price difference, it probably was one of those "made to tighter specs" models.
Whatever. It sounds good when you say "it tasted like it run offa luther's boot or somethin" into it.
