Question about Sample Delay....

Post by Recycled_Brains » Fri Dec 09, 2005 1:44 pm

with this project i'm working on now, i'm finding that when i add an eq plugin to a track, it's showing that i have 64 samples of delay on that track. when i remove the plug-in, this disappears....

how is this delay effecting my sound, and how can i fix it? i tried nudging the region by samples to see if it affected it at all.... it didn't.

what is the 'delay' in reference to? (i.e. where does the delay exist among the tracks... what is it delayed in comparison to?)

The "delay" in question refers to processing delay; iow how many samples it takes for the computer to do the extra bit of math that the plug-in requires. It's doubtful you'd be able to hear a 64 sample delay affect your mix. But a hungrier plug, like a convolution reverb or high-end EQ, would definitely shift your audio noticeably...or just shift things enough that your groove will get messed up or phase relationships between instruments will suffer.

If you do shift your audio around, do it on an alternate playlist so that you still have the un-moved audio somewhere in case you change your mind about which plug-in to use.

I either correct for it, or use the ADC in PTHD. It messes with phase relationships horribly.Totally unacceptable.

so, i should just shift the tracks backwards by 64 samples?

i agree that it f's up the phase a lot.

If it sounds crappier with the plugin delay, then ....yep.

i switched to a different eq that gave me better results anyway, and there's no delay this time.

the toms are another story though. i'm going to nudge them back and see if it makes any noticeable difference.

thanks joel.
