i have a 501 that i love...and based on the discussion here, i'm going to start trolling eBay for a 522. for some of the stuff that i record, the more squash, the better. :)

I think 522s are great because they are totally tweaked and seem to pass the highs through and kill just about everything else, so acoustic guitars and cymbals and stuff are about the only thing that can get on the other side of it.

Plus it has no make up gain, so what you kill stays dead.

They are great when you have something and it needs to be sort of smoothly trebeley and in the background.

Not a go-to comp, but a nice flavor for once in a while... esp for say $75.
