What to do with blown speakers?

Post by curtiswyant » Mon Dec 12, 2005 3:42 pm

I've got a few blown speakers lying around, a 12" mojotone, 8" champ speaker, etc...just wondering if I should throw them out or build a guitar-cab-from-hell or something?

How badly blown are they? I've heard you can fix small tear with some elmers glue and tissue paper carefully applied in a few layers.

I heard that Dave Friedman sometimes wires up blown/ripped speakers, lays them on the floor and mics them up. Seems like it could sound cool for something.

do you mean blown as in the cone is damaged, or is it the voice coil?

Take the magnets off of them:

They make great welding magnets

The wife loves the 2lb fridge magnet to hold up store lists.

Sell them as healing magnets, I'm sure they work better since they once had music "flowing" through them

A recone would cost as much as a new speaker...I think the vc's are blown.

i've been wondering about this too. i just opened up my bassman cab today to discover my 5th blown 15" in 6 months. these are blown as in they make no sound and there's no current between the terminals. it seems like such a waste to just trash speakers, but i don't really understand how coils work and if they can be repaired...

Were the voice coils not blown, and you didn't want to recone, could you remove the cone entirely and use the voice coil as a sort of power soak?

Check with Uncle Spot. He recones speakers and does a great job. I just had him do an old JBL and he was cheap and did a great job. Can't say enough good about him. Just be patient on the turn around...

re-cone?

Post by leftoverking » Sun Jan 15, 2006 2:38 am

my amp repair guy here in arcata had both jbl's in my old twin reverb re-coned, and the voice coils replaced. not sure where he sent them, but i'm glad we did it cause those old jbl's sound awesome. not sure how much i'd care about a champ speaker. crappy speaker magnets are great for picking up nails in your driveway or on construction jobsites. a blown speaker could save you a blown tire!
