I finally get it

Post by maxadocious » Mon Aug 07, 2006 9:52 pm

It's not bad that I like Led Zeppelin. The performances and production values of their recordings are amazing, and continue to be timeless masterpieces. The problem is that they sound so good that people keep trying to remake it. Forget all this lovecraft man, this is like Gabriel garcia marquez, a circle of fruitless nostalgia that comes from something that was great once.

Everyone has different problems with the current "state of rock and roll," I guess there are certain trends, but there is SO much music going on right now that I don't think there are any holes that are unfilled. By "state of rock and roll" does that just mean the stuff that gets radio play and MTV? Because I don't listen to that shit; it's all just scenester posers trying to look like GreenDay who is trying to look like the Cure. If anything, adding some Bonham drums to that equation is an improvement...

Postmodernism has ruined rock and roll, not to say it's been ruined. It also created rock and roll. The American public getting stupider (lol) and getting rid of music programs for kids, and many young people not knowing who Miles Davis is has ruined rock and roll.

Peepee poopoo caca ruined rock and rolls.

Who's this Led Zeppelin fellow? And why does he not spell his first name right?

I think a pretty good part of why Bonham sounded so damn good can be directly attributable to John Paul Jones' excellent bass playing for what its worth.

My vote.

PS... rock's pushin' sixty.

It's safe to say it's entered the realm of "classical" forms like blues, country, etc. Doesn't mean it's dead. Doesn't even mean it can't grow...

But come get me if it shows any signs of real life. That would be interesting.

My 2? to add to this idle chitchat:

JPJ's bass playing certainly pushed the rhythm section to great heights. But listen to Bonham solo (Moby Dick, Bonzo's Montreux, or that folder of solo'd Bonham drums that's floating around the internets) and you can hear he's got a bounce and swing to his playing that's all his own.

As to the gripes of the original poster:
takeout wrote:Post-Zep: everyone gets a hard-on over "how huge the drums sound, dude". And if you like drums that sound like cannons and are mixed loud enough to supplant just about everything else.
The drums on "Levee", as one good example, aren't really mixed that loud. Listen again for the first time.

Zep was what it was... They never made a bad song.
A few rough live performances... But their recording work was always inspired and inspiring.

I think disco, DJs, Punk, Glam, Hair Bands and Rap ruined rock & roll.

But maybe I'm still dwelling in the '70s?

Zep was what it was... They never made a bad song.
You can say that again. And all these years later they sound even better while most other bands sound embarrassing in some way.
