Yeah, I said it. And I'm right. "Lead drums".

This thread is gonna be awesome.

You want details? All right.

Pre-Zep: drums sounded like drums, and were mixed together with the other instruments.

Post-Zep: everyone gets a hard-on over "how huge the drums sound, dude". And if you like drums that sound like cannons and are mixed loud enough to supplant just about everything else.

Rantings of a bitter bass player? Perhaps. That doesn't make me wrong.

I thought the locking floyd rose tremolo system ruined rock and roll? hmmm.

Maybe Led Zeppelin ruined rock and roll, but I believe if I were in the position to produce records like they did, I wouldn't have passed up that opportunity. You just can't blame a couple of guys for ruining rock by getting a drum sound like "When The Levee Breaks".

Personally I hate large drum sounds where the kick it totally fucking badass sounding and the toms are wide open. I strive for really thin dead drumsounds with 0 ambience.

I seem to recall a few months back...

Maybe it was a year or so...

That there was a big discussion on how drums are no longer as present in modern recordings as they used to be.

So does this mean they have reverted back to what they used to sound like?

Or is it that they're way too big, but just way too quiet?

Led Zep drum sounds absolutely worked for Led Zep. Will they work for other bands? Yes and no.
Personally, I think chaining everything to a metronome/click track is ruining rock and roll.

I think Rock and Roll is a youth-oriented art form that is 50 years old and therefore no longer applies to itself. If it's ruined, it's about damn time.

Well, according to a previous thread... it was Billy Joel's faux scream befor the lame sax solo in "Still Rock N' Roll To Me" or whatever... I agree thoug... big awesome drums do suck and edge out the bass player. We should mix the guitars tuned down to drop C and squashed to hell instead to carve out a place for the poor bass player. Opinions are like... well, you know.

I think looping was the end of rock and roll.

But I saw an Arcade Fire show this fall and I believe they're resuscitating rock and roll. Wow.

bass players who only play the root note of the guitar chords are ruining rock 'n' roll. if they'd play something interesting, then their instrument would stick out. instead, they just fill in the "low end" of the guitar spectrum

Q: How many bass players to change a lightbulb?

A: 1, 5, 1, 5, 1, 5, 1, 5 etc.

My nephew Lamont is also partly responsible, always listening to that junkyard music in the truck. I tell him all the time "hey Lamont! how about some Sabbath for a change?"
